My name is Amy Howton. I have a background in Women’s Studies and Community Mental Health Counseling and work in the University of Cincinnati’s Women’s Center. I am passionate about teaching and learning through community building and critical reflection. My work–from motherhood, to crisis intervention, to program development, to teaching, to supervision–centers on listening, self-awareness, honesty, and empathy. I believe that in order to create change, one must always attend to power and privilege and how it operates within systems of change; otherwise, we run the risk of perpetuating silence and marginalization. This blog is one way for me to hold myself accountable to these beliefs and learn from my own reflection on my practice.
